Veneers vs. bonding: choosing the right option

Woman considering cosmetic dental treatment options

If you're unhappy with chipped, stained, or uneven teeth, you've likely come across two popular cosmetic options: porcelain veneers and dental bonding. Both can dramatically improve your smile — but they work differently, cost differently, and suit different situations.

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding involves applying a tooth-coloured composite resin directly to the tooth surface. Your dentist sculpts and shapes the material by hand, then hardens it with a special light. The entire process is typically done in a single appointment.

Bonding is ideal for:

  • Repairing small chips or cracks
  • Closing minor gaps between teeth
  • Improving the shape of a single tooth
  • Covering stains on individual teeth

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain custom-made in a dental lab to fit over the front surface of your teeth. The process typically requires two appointments — one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and another to bond the veneers in place.

Veneers are ideal for:

  • A complete smile makeover across multiple teeth
  • Correcting significant discolouration that doesn't respond to whitening
  • Reshaping teeth that are worn, uneven, or slightly misaligned
  • Long-lasting, stain-resistant results

Comparing the two

Cost

Bonding is significantly more affordable — typically $200–$500 per tooth. Veneers range from $900–$2,500 per tooth. If budget is a primary concern, bonding offers an excellent entry point for cosmetic improvement.

Durability

Porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years with proper care. Bonding lasts 5–7 years on average, and is more susceptible to chipping and staining over time.

Appearance

Both look natural, but veneers have a slight edge. Porcelain mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel more closely, and resists staining better than composite resin.

Tooth preparation

Bonding usually requires little to no removal of tooth structure — making it a reversible option. Veneers require a thin layer of enamel to be removed, which means the process is permanent.

"I often recommend bonding as a first step for patients who want to test a cosmetic change before committing to veneers. It's a great way to see what's possible."

Which one is right for you?

The best choice depends on your goals, budget, and the condition of your teeth:

  • Choose bonding if you need a quick, affordable fix for minor imperfections on one or a few teeth.
  • Choose veneers if you want a comprehensive, long-lasting transformation that covers multiple teeth.
  • Not sure? That's completely normal. A consultation lets us assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and recommend the best path forward.
